Plain-Language Consent for Parents
This page explains exactly what happens when you turn on family sharing in Porchlight. It is written at an 8th-grade reading level. Please read it carefully before you consent.
What Porchlight Is (and Is Not)
Porchlight is a wellness app, not a medical device. It looks at the Apple Watch trends you already generate (resting heart rate, HRV, sleep, activity, respiratory rate, wrist temperature where available) and tells your family, in plain English, when something is drifting outside your usual range.
It does not diagnose any condition. It does not detect emergencies or falls. It is not a substitute for talking to your doctor or calling 911 if you feel unwell.
What You Control — Every Toggle Is Yours
When you choose to share with family, you decide:
- Which metrics to share (you can turn any metric on or off independently)
- Which family members can see your trends
- You can change these settings or turn sharing off completely at any time
Nothing is shared until you explicitly tap "Share with Family" on each metric you want to share.
What Your Family Will See
If you turn sharing on for a metric, your family members will see:
- A simple status: Steady (everything looks normal for you), Calibrating (we're still learning your baseline — usually takes 3 weeks), or Worth a look (a slow trend is drifting outside your usual range)
- A short plain-English note (e.g., "Your resting heart rate has been a bit higher than usual for the last 6 days")
- Weekly digests that summarize the week in friendly language
- A doctor-ready PDF you can choose to share with them or your physician
They will NOT see:
- Your raw heart rate numbers minute-by-minute
- Your full sleep stages or detailed graphs unless you explicitly allow it in future versions
- Any medical diagnosis or emergency alert
How Sharing Works Technically (Privacy Built In)
1. All the hard math (figuring out your personal baseline and detecting drift) happens on your iPhone, privately.
2. Only a summary (your typical range + whether you're drifting + confidence level) is sent to our secure servers — and only for the metrics you turned on.
3. Your family members' apps fetch that summary when they open the app. They never get raw data from your Watch.
4. If you tap "Revoke" for a family member or a metric, we delete that summary from our servers within 24 hours. You can also queue a deletion even if your phone is offline.
The Audit Log — You Can Always See Who Looked
Porchlight keeps a simple log of every time a family member views your summary. You can see it anytime in Settings → Family → Audit Log. This includes the date, which family member, and which metric they viewed.
How to Revoke Access (Two Taps)
1. Open Porchlight on your iPhone
2. Go to Settings → Family Sharing
3. Tap the family member or the specific metric
4. Tap Revoke Access
Done. They immediately lose access. We delete the data from our servers within 24 hours.
Your Rights as the Parent
- You are always in control.
- You can see exactly what your family sees.
- You can turn sharing off for any metric or any person at any time.
- Revoking access does not cancel anyone else's subscription — it only stops them from seeing your data.
- If you delete your Porchlight account, all your summaries and sharing records are deleted.
Important Reminders
- Porchlight is not an emergency service. If you feel sick, call your doctor or 911. Do not wait for an alert.
- A "Steady" status is good news but is not a guarantee of perfect health.
- False positives and false negatives can happen because consumer wearables are not perfect.
- Always talk to your doctor about any health concerns — Porchlight is just one more signal in the conversation.
Consent Acknowledgment
By tapping I Agree and Share (or equivalent) during the family sharing setup flow, you confirm that:
- You have read and understood this Consent to Share Health Trends.
- You understand that only summarized trends (not raw data) will be shared with the family members you choose.
- You understand you can revoke access at any time in two taps.
- You understand Porchlight is a wellness tool, not a medical device or emergency service.
You can re-read this page anytime from Settings → Legal → Consent to Share.
Draft note: This consent language is intentionally written in plain, large-type friendly language suitable for older adults. It must be presented in-app with large text, high contrast, and clear "I Agree" / "Cancel" buttons. The in-app version should include per-metric toggle previews so the parent sees exactly what will be shared before confirming.
